UPDATE 2018:
Some of my first corsets were underbusts and waist cinchers created for our TG/cd girlfriends. And I realize that incorrect labeling will date me… back in the day, online searches for TG (transgender) and cd (crossdresser) were what you used to find were looking for in resources and fashion for MTF transwomen and crossdressing males. My friends and clients were transwomen, crossdressers, drag queens and what they all have in common was that they loved what a corset could do for their silhouette. Conversely, they opened my world to understand the spectrum of womanhood and peoplehood, as I spent time with each one fitting them and chatting during their fitting. I attended a lot more events, bazaars and clubs and got to know my transwomen girlfriends a whole lot better. All of this began around 2001 and continues today. Transwoman has appropriately replaced the term”transgender,” as “transgender” replaced “transvestite” for those old enough to remember (and for nostalgia, you’re welcome to debate “transsexual” and “transvestite” amongst yourselves!) In my world, a transwoman is a woman. I hope that if you, reader, decide to contact me for a corset, I am sensitive to your needs and personhood. And I feel well experienced in also creating for crossdressers and of course, I am always proud when drag queens add my corsets to their wardrobe! I have proudly fitted many folx and cisgendered people as well in the past 17 years. Custom fitting is the name of the game and you receive my time and attention when you schedule an appointment with me.

This valuable experience helped me perfect my patterning and fitting skills for many body types, giving me the satisfaction of creating something that made someone feel beautiful, a bit transformed and able to present the silhouette they desired in clothing they loved. After 13 years, it is still heartening to provide this valuable service to women and men who want to be laced up and have their waist nipped in.

I have co-curated a group art show with Rick Castro, owner of Antebellum Gallery in Hollywood, California!
“Cinch Me,” a corset-themed art show in all mediums, will open May 18.
Antebellum, the only fetish gallery in America, is an eclectic treasure and one of my favorite places. My first visit to Antebellum was for a silent art auction for an artist friend. Rick and I became acquainted discussing New Orleans artist George Dureau and his important influence on Robert Mapplethorpe’s work and of course, Jack Fritscher’s Mapplethorpe biography, “Assault With a Deadly Camera.” As I saw the worn copies of “Drummer” in Rick’s extensive book collection, I got a a bit of idea of what Antebellum is all about and have only scratched the surface.
I am very excited and humbled to have been given this opportunity.

No other garment in the history of fashion has inspired as much ire, fascination or conversation as the corset. Developed and changed over hundreds of years and through many cultures, the corset supposedly left mainstream fashion around World War I, but it never left our consciousness. The corset saw the light of day as it was relegated to historical re-enactments and theatre/productions. To a few, it went underground, darkly and sexually, as it became the very thing revered and desired. As a fetish, corsetry was transformed into modern, or contemporary, corsetry, eschewing all myths of health concerns and the politics of female oppression.
Yes, people still wear corsets in this new millennia. Yes, men wear them. As a vessel, the corset holds our deep fantasies and desires. As boned armor, it fortifies and liberates.

You will be able to alter a waist cincher pattern (provided in supplies) to fit you. You can bring your own exterior fashion fabric. The rest of the supplies are available as a kit. Your required tools and sewing kit are also listed in ”Download PDF” here: http://www.sewingartscenter.com/www/?a=classes&id=1347 Many supplies are not needed on the first day of class, so don’t panic if you don’t have all of them. I will go over many supplies and needs for upcoming classes as we work on our waist cinchers.

Prerequisite for this waist cincher class is the Sewing Arts Beginning Sewing or equivalent. You can describe your own beginning (and advanced!) sewing skills when you call to register for the class and inquire. A major requirement would be familiarity and experience with your own sewing machine.
This will be the fourth time I’ve taught this class and I love it! The classtime is intense and a lot of information is given. I believe that you may learn a few things that will help you with other areas of sewing and costume making. We have a lot of fun at the Sewing Arts Center and we are committed to helping you create and make!
